I just registered the TR equally a classic (Non a Celebrated). Demand to have collector insurance, and not drive more 3K miles a twelvemonth. Go along the same plates, but you go to the inspection station where they verify the odometer works and they slap on a two year sticker. No other inspection. First yr is $25 then $10 each year after.

Good style to get for those that take mods to their cars, or do not want to deal with inspections / price of inspection.

For more than info call the NJ DMV and ask them to send you an awarding for Classic Car Registration.

Just did this on my '74 BMW. I thought the car had to be at to the lowest degree 25 years old?
  3. Greg G

Thats the departure between Collector Car and Classic. No historic period requirement on Collectors

And so Classic registration gets you the Historic QQ plates?
  5. ASG 86TR
    Greg...y'all are right....Collector...
  6. Greg G
All I know is that Collector does non have QQ'due south... I was able to keep my personalized tags.

There are two dissimilar forms of registration: Collector Car and Celebrated.

To annals a car as "Historic", the auto must be 25 years or older. Yous go "QQ" plates, which can be standard or personalized (My Due east-type roadster has QQ plates that say "MY69E"). Supposedly, by law, these cars can only be used for educational and brandish purposes or club outings. I've had Historic/QQ plates on old Jaguars for years and driven them all over, and never had a problem. You are supposed to accept "collector car" insurance for them also, only the state doesn't bank check as long as y'all take insurance. You pay ane registration fee of $35, and renew it every 3 years at no price. In that location is no inspection requirement at all for a celebrated registered vehicle, and you only need to brandish a rear license plate.

Collector Motorcar registration is different. You annals the motorcar every bit a normal car, regardless of age, and separately employ for Collector Car designation. As noted by someone else, you are limited to driving the car 3000 miles per twelvemonth, and you are supposed to have collector car insurance. You are subject to inspection for mileage merely every two years, at which fourth dimension the merely matter they check is that your odometer is actually working and you lot take not exceeded the mileage limit. You get a special triangular inspection sticker that shows information technology is a Collector Car. I registered my '84 Mondial that mode to avoid having to deal with the fact that it is a Euro spec car and may not laissez passer emmissions tests. You lot tin can have regular plates or vanity plates (not QQ), and must have two plates, ane front, one rear.

Promise that clarifies. More often than not, you accept to deal directly with Trenton to get Historic plates. I've gotten mine by going straight to the DMV (sorry... MVC) office in Trenton. They volition issue them on the spot. Collector motorcar designation y'all can exercise at whatsoever local MVC office, but the people who mitt out the forms probably won't know what yous are talking nearly (they will give you lot forms for Historic plates, which is NOT what y'all want). You'll probably stop upwards talking to someone at the window to get the right course.

I went to two locations earlier they could find one of the triangular stickers...

I went to inspection identify in Montclair...tiny place, just was very quick, and new what they were doing. I called DMV and they mailed me the form, sent it dorsum and 2 weeks later got the special card that you give to the State inspection facility.

Amazing how information technology varies from heart to heart. Was able to consummate mine in three steps.

ane. Wayne DMV (Rte 23) picked up Collector Application.

    2. Renewed registration in Oakland DMV, they handed me the special waiver carte forth with new registration.

    3. Ridgewood Inspection Station... supervisor only one who recognized the waiver carte du jour, looked @ my OD, asked me to drive around the cake to verify the OD was working, he then allowed me to install the triangle, and I was on my manner!

Basically this allows me to skip the safe and emissions tests, and also puzzles my friends as to why my sticker is different :D

I went to Lodi on one of the hottest days of this summertime; the "inspector" reluctantly found a sticker, had me drive around in the parking lot so he could meet 1/10 of a mile tick off, barely looked at my insurance card, and I was done.

Cool... I understand if you lot get collector car insurance, they also limit you to 3000 miles and the automobile must exist garaged someplace that merely you can open (i.eastward. locked, and it's non a shared location).

I wonder if I could keep myself to 3000 miles/year or less....

  13. Information technology's more that. No driving to work, no driving to the shop, etc. Information technology'south supposed to encompass cars that are brought out once in a while to get to a testify or a cruise-in, etc.

Evidently, you lot could drive it any way y'all like but you're driving without insurance if yous do. The insurance visitor might await the other mode for something pocket-sized only you might every bit well have no insurance if yous're involved in a serious accident.

I accept full, bulldoze it anywhere, anytime insurance and registration for my Factory 5 Cobra. I want no exclusions and it's non worth the hazard to game the organization IMHO.

I'k looking into collector auto registration for my cars, though not also urgently, my '65 330 passed the full NJ inspection kickoff time through!

From what I understand, collector car insurance is similar in cost (less that half the cost of my current Ferrari policy) to antique/archetype insurance except you tin use it however y'all like as long as it accumulates less than 3k miles in a yr. So far I've only contacted State Farm though and I'm not sure how authentic the info is.

    Regards,

mfennell is correct, and while anybody's needs may be dissimilar, it suits me but fine.

Art, my collector automobile insurance is thru American Collectors based in Scarlet Hill. Never needed to file a claim, only so far my dealings take been painless and professional. I tin can look upwardly their # at your request.

I bought a 66 330 GT in Vermont. I accept already purchased the car, but am having the engine rebuilt and A/C installed before I take delivery of it, so I won't actually have the machine in NJ for at least a couple months. I would like to insure and annals the car now, merely I remember that will exist hard since the auto is in a unlike state. Besides Vermont is a "no title" state, and so will the lack of a championship arrive difficult to register in NJ. I volition likely utilise collector auto insurance.
Any advice on how to get insurance and registration done earlier the machine is in the state?

Likewise, with regard to license Collector or Historic licence plates, do the Celebrated plates look different? I encounter several references to "QQ" plates -- does this hateful they await like regular modern plates but have QQ in the number, or practise they really wait similar vintage plates? In Florida, you can find old 1966 plates and annals a 1966 car with those -- I would like to exercise the aforementioned, but I don't know if this is what is meant by historic in NJ.

PS: I debated whether or not to offset a new thread for this -- but there is so much useful and related information in this thread already that I thought information technology was improve to add on to this i.
